Smart Submetering

Our Microgrid OS provides live data metering, power outage monitoring and automated postpaid billing.

What it costs?

Running a smart submetering system includes two costs

  1. Hardware costs and maintenance: smart meters and communication modules
  2. We charge a monthly flat service fee per service account/meter.

What smart meters do you use?

We use Chint Model DDSU666 (Single phase) and DSSU666 (Three phase) smart meters. They communicate with our Microgrid OS via modbus RTU and an internet connection.

How is the billing handled?

Billing is runs automatically on the 1st business day of the month. Payments are due within 7 days from the date a bill is issued. VAT Taxes and compliance reports are generated and filled monthly as well.

Why do you support prepaid electricity?

We offer our customers realtime monitoring from their electricity usage and this allows them to plan for their monthly bills and make them more predictable. Contrary to mainstream knowledge that prepaid billing is always preferred by customers in Africa, the feedback we have gotten is that the vast majority of customers appreciate the simplicity of an automated and transparent postpaid bill. We currently don’t have future plans of supporting prepaid billing.

I am a landlord or developer, why should I invest in smart submetering?

There are several reasons our customers set up submetering for their properties.

  1. Superior tenant/homeowner experience. 90% of customers report being very happy with the modern smart metering and billing infrastructure we provide.
  2. Expansion: Our submetering system can be expanded to enable a Community Wide Backup (CWB) in the future. Setting this up without submetering earlier would increase the cost by over 70%.
